Buying a used car from another province: Do I need to transfer the registration first or can I transfer ownership directly?

I’m looking for a used car, but most of the cars I’ve found have license plates registered in other cities. For example, if I buy a car with Bandung plates while living in Tangerang, what’s the process? Do I need to transfer the registration documents first, or are there other steps involved? I’m also curious about how long the process takes before I can get new license plates.

If you buy a car with Bandung plates and your KTP is registered in Tangerang, you'll need to go through a process called mutasi and balik nama. Basically, you first have to request a document transfer (cabut berkas) from the original Samsat in Bandung, then register the car at the Samsat covering your Tangerang address. You'll need the original STNK, BPKB, purchase receipt, and your KTP. There will also be a physical inspection to verify the engine and chassis numbers. The whole process can take a few weeks, sometimes over a month depending on the Samsat. My suggestion is to make sure all documents are complete and the vehicle tax is clear before buying. It's not that complicated, just a bit time-consuming because you're dealing with two different regions.
